- All Lanes Running (ALR) – never has a hard shoulder
- Dynamic – the hard shoulder can be turned on and off
- Controlled – speeds & access to lanes controlled by overhead gantries
“Budget restrictions” mean these motorways have been forced on unsuspecting road users with no education on how to use them, with disastrous result. We have to settle for this option (i.e. unsafe roads) while the same government dept has managed to increase the number of highly paid executives by 10 fold in just 6 years!
Highways England have been repeatedly instructed to increase safety measures & supply verifiable safety information, both of which they have consistently failed to do – meanwhile people are dying.

We must campaign to have these “smart” motorways stopped before many more people are killed or have their lives ruined.
I am appalled by this and have always questioned How on earth these motorways were a good idea… how can we stop these motorways continuing
Keep this up guys, I’ve just seen you on TV, and hope you can keep fighting. I have said from the start that this scheme has to be the most crazy and dangerous idea ever. 1 death is 1 far too many. I don’t understand what the people who dreamt up this stupid idea are thinking. As said on TV this is basically manslaughter. Safety should come before journey time, so people take a few minutes longer to get to where they are going. If this was a business or company doing this to employees they would be in jail by now!
Thank you for the support it does mean a lot and don’t worry there’s more on the legal To Do list after the judicial review
I have written several letters to The Daily Telegraph & have also lobbied my MP. Tobias Elwood suggesting that the Hard Shoulder should be reinstated immediately . What are they waiting for, they know that this scheme is sheer madness. I sometimes think if a fatality occurred in the family of those idiots who set up Highways England it would be changed overnight.
I wouldn’t wish in on anyone, your loved one goes out the door one morning and never comes home and then after someone breaks your heart telling you that you find it was avoidable. I will never understand why anyone thought they were a good idea, keep up the great work, we will win this
