We wanted to hold the now Secretary of State for Transport to her promise to get rid of Smart Motorways. Up until becoming the person that can actually make it happen, Louise Haigh was very vocal on her feelings about Smart Motorways.

Why are we still spending a lot of money talking about this while people die?
We’ve had 30+ reviews, investigations, ‘stock takes’, select committees, independent analysis, coroner’s reports, ombudsmen enquiries, etc into existing smart motorways, in just the last five years alone.
And always with National Highways/Depart of Transport/Government involvement!
.
Allowing the people that have defended smart motorways to the hilt in the face of all concerns, for many years, spent billions of pounds of tax payers money, benefited greatly in terms of career progression/knighthoods/letters after their name is like allowing a child to mark their own school work.
only lives hang in the balance with this version.
Some Cost Notes:
- £900 million to be spent on just fitting more refuge areas
- Over £2 billion still to be spent on “finishing off smart motorway builds already in progress”
- Many of the different scheme costs on National Highways own website are still “to be confirmed” just the ones costed total over 3 billion and that’s less than half the schemes.
