“The sister of a man who was killed on the M1 has backed a campaign which aims to prevent any more ‘smart’ motorways being created.
Alexandru Murgeanu, 22, and Jason Mercer, 44, both died after they had stopped on the hard shoulder of the motorway near J34 on June 7.
Mr Mercer’s widow Claire said they had been swapping insurance details after a collision when they were struck by a lorry.
It happened on a section of road where the hard shoulder was used for traffic – and Mrs Mercer has now said these ‘smart’ motorways should be banned because they increase the risk for motorists.
Her call has been echoed by the sister of Mr Murgeanu, who lived in Mansfield and worked as a Yodel delivery driver.”
