  1. copy of letter to my MP
    Smart Motorways

Last week I had occasion to use the M6 locally for the first time since its conversion to 4 lane running. I was horrified to find that there are no overhead gantries with lane closure / speed control displays. It was a wet day and with all lanes running HGV spray seriously reduced visibility.
Some time ago I suffered a breakdown on the M6. I was driving a new car on a February evening in light sleet. As it transpired the car battery connections had never properly been made, my vehicle engine cut out and all electrical systems failed. I was able to cruise to the hard shoulder and walk to the nearest emergence phone. The next twenty minutes were some of the most alarming in my life with large vehicles passing a few feet away in the dark at high speed. I have seldom been more relieved than when a recovery vehicle with its’ bright emergency lights arrived. Had this happened on the M6 as now configured I doubt that my car or I would have survived. I urge you to support the reinstatement of hard shoulders on motorways as, despite what those who juggle statistics state, these roads are far more dangerous without the hard shoulder.

  2. Hi Barry
Your experience sound terrifying, the loud voices against s.m are really growing in number and we will not stop until we get the hard shoulder back. I’m hoping the government will see sense and save lives, by not waiting till our legal action in the high court forces them””
