Just last month a judge ruled that a fatal collision on the M25 would not have happened if there had been a hard shoulder.
A retired police traffic sergeant campaigning against smart motorways has spoken out about his fears that these “killer” roads are leaving people “dangerously stranded”.
Mike Rawson, 77, worked as a Met Police traffic sergeant for 28 years, dealing with all kinds of road traffic accidents, including multi-fatality collisions.
He has been rigorously campaigning against smart motorways since 2013, fearing that drivers lives are being put at risk every day without the safety of the hard shoulder – which smart motorways do not have.
Just last month, a judge said that a fatal collision on the M25, which killed two women and left a young girl with life-changing injuries, could have been prevented if there had been a hardshoulder.
On one section of the M25, a BBC Panorama investigation found the number of near misses had increased 20-fold since the hard shoulder was taken away in April 2014.
