The cause of this incident is not the reason for this post, the undisputable fact is no hard shoulder made the incident much more dangerous and will have made it much harder for Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and South Yorkshire Police to get to.
Putting all those AND the people trapped in the traffic in even more danger!

I totally agree smart motorways are killers I would like to see them band I can’t believe that some idiot in government thought of these killer roads .
Go left and climb out of the passenger door? Yeah right. That portly gent in the TV ad couldn’t get out of the drivers door let alone the passenger door with the big plastic central consul in modern cars In fact you don’t actually see him get out or climb over the barrier. Highways England talk about ‘Educating drivers’ I think its Highways England that needs educating.
Another aspect is never mentioned. What if I feel really poorly like I’m going to pass out. Just about manage to pull over, slump forward and then what? Come on HE its not by chance that you came into being on 1st April.
Its a dreadful thought that the only thing that will make HE do a U turn on these idiotic roads is a catastrophic multi vehicle pile up with several fatalities. Then I hope the Board of Directors as per the HE website will hold their hands up and say ‘we were wrong’
Watch them squirm and snivel to avoid corporate manslaughter charges. With the fatalities already I really don’t know how they sleep at night…
