Historic railway bridges – claiming to halt the demolition of Victorian railway bridges as part of a new scheme to promote walking and cycling with a £338m budget he has sanctioned the filling in the arches with concrete. However Labour Peer Richard Faulkner called the act “cultural vandalism” saying the bridge just needed £5000 of repairs. Instead Highways England used 1,000 tonnes of cement and aggregate at Great Musgrave to block the archway. HE claimed no planning permission was needed as it was part of an infill programme, Eden District Council have told HE to apply for retrospective planning permission though. Further infill projects could include bridges in Saltash, Cornwall, and Dumfries and Galloway.
