SMK Statement

Mr Szuba’s guilty plea at Sheffield Magistrates on September 19 to causing the deaths of Jason Mercer and Alexandru Murgeanu by driving without due care and attention was a surprise to us and many others.

But we do not believe the correct person is taking responsibility for the horrific effect the events of June 7, 2019 had, and continue to have, on so many people’s lives.

These deaths and many others would not have happened if Highways England’s priorities were not budgets and which contractor would win the next round of projects.

That is why we have reported Highways England for corporate manslaughter and we are taking a judicial review to hold the government and HE to account and to stop and reverse the death traps that are smart motorways.
