“‘We know the accident rates on smart motorways are no different from conventional motorways. They’re about ten times safer than normal built-up roads.’
Mr O’Sullivan pointed out that one in ten fatalities on motorways occurs on the hard shoulder, which under all lane running is permanently or temporarily turned into a live lane ”
So that’s comparing motorways to “built up roads” to get the “ten times safer” text in, which he hopes is all people will hear and not revealing how many deaths in live lanes
We did a count of specific word on H.E report into just SVD technology, (which is only on a 5th of roads) very revealing. All estimated data and no focus on saving lives.

Hi,
I live in South Cumbria and I travel to visit friends and family in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and my daughter in Cheltenham. I feel my journey’s are far more dangerous travelling on smart sections of the M6 and M5. Before moving to Cumbria myself I travelled there to visit my parents for over 30 years and I never felt nervous before Smart Motorways .
I think they should be abolished completely. Nothing less would make the roads safe enough. It defeats all logic, how much better is it to have a longer safer journey? The fact that AA drivers are not allowed to stop speaks volumes.
I am in complete support of your efforts Claire. We need people like you.
Thank you for the support I’m of the same mind, when ever I’m asked what needs doing “smart motorways need completely scrapping now!’
