Smart Motorways Kill is campaigning to get the hard shoulder back on all UK motorways, without exception.

Motorways had hard shoulders for nearly 50 years, they are a critical safety feature in an already dangerous environment. No technology can get you out of harms way quicker than the HGV behind you, can reach your stranded vehicle.

Since the introduction of smart motorways, hundreds of lives have been ruined, because the current safety provisions for smart motorways are insufficient. The refuge areas meant to replace the hard shoulder are too infrequent and the techonology which is meant to spot stranded vehilces has massive fundimental problem that result in it not working properly. but the officaal line from National Hghways is to constantly downplay the extent of the problems.

The removal of the hard shoulder means that should your vehicle break down, there is no imediately available safer place for you to stop. This presents increased risk to yourself, your passengers, other road users, and the emergency services. This is a price not worth paying.

Smart motorways also put less mobile people at increased risk. This is discrimination. Smart Motorways Kill campaign has constantly questioned and challenged this, even through our lawyers, but we have never had an acceptable answer on how this is legally allowed. Now after over 6 years of demanding answers on this point, we have been told this discrimination is acceptable as it’s offset by the “economic benefits”

Our campaign, with your help, is bringing a judicial review to force a legal stop to smart motorways in the names of everyone needlessly killed and hurt on smart motorways.
